Classic Reel: Deewar 1975
Deewar is a 1970s Bollywood classic that has been the inspiration for countless movies and filmmakers. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in its leading roles, the film revolves around two brothers of an impoverished family and the conflict that arises between them. It was a breakthrough for Parveen Babi as a major leading lady in Bollywood. Deewar also catapulted the writing duo Salim-Javed to fame. The film, set in the slums of Mumbai, the underbelly of the massive city, is built around the ‘wall’ that rises between the two brothers as they are placed against each other, hence the title. Deewar accurately mirrors the turbulent socio-political climate of the time. The movie has been ranked among the top 25 Bollywood movies ever.
