CLASSIC REEL: GOLMAAL

At the time of its release, Golmaal stood in stark contrast to the rest of the films that flooded theatres, which almost always followed the trope of the ‘angry Bollywood hero.’ The film is an absolute comic relief, relying on ample amounts of slapstick comedy. The story revolves around the central character Ram (played by Amol Palekar), a hard-working accountant who is employed by Bhavani Shankar (played by Utpal Dutt), a stickler for sanskaari values who despises men who love sports. Despite being a sports fan, Ram pretends otherwise in order to land the job. When Bhavani spots Ram at a hockey game, Ram lies that it was his twin, Lucky. Golmaal delves into the life of a typical middle class family in the 70s and comically presents the values they held so dearly back then.
